SANTA ANA, Calif. — Natalie Bodnar shot 74 to lead the Sacramento State women's golf team in the first round and Sagee Palavivatana's 75 had the team low in the second round at the UC Irvine Invitational presented by Kia on Monday.

Both golfers are among the top 15 in the field. The winner of the tournament earns a sponsor exemption to the 2013 Kia Classic on the LPGA Tour. Gonzaga's Alice Kim shot 67-72-139 and holds a seven-stroke lead heading into the final round.

Bodnar is tied for 10th place with rounds of 74-77-151. During the morning round, the freshman bettered her previous collegiate low behind four birdies. Bodnar began her day on the 17th hole with a bogey but immediately followed with a birdie on the par-5 18th. A bogey on the first hole came before two pars and a birdie on the par-4 fourth. After two birdies and two pars, she birdied Nos. 9 and 10 (both par 5). Her round ended with two pars on both sides of a bogey.

In her second round, Bodnar bogeyed six of her first seven holes. A string of eight pars was trailed by a birdie on the par-3 14th. She wrapped things up with two more pars.

Palavivatana, who was the team leader at last week's Folino Invitational, shot 77-75-152 and is tied for 13th place. The sophomore parred her first four holes in the morning and remained even through nine holes with a birdie and a bogey. From that point, she bogeyed holes 6-9 before parring the par-5 10th. Palavivatana alternated pars and bogeys over her last four holes.

A birdie on the par-5 15th began her second round and with a bogey and eight pars she was even through 10 holes. Bogeys on Nos. 7 and 8, five consecutive pars and a bogey on the par-3 14th brought her day to a close.

Junior Tiffany Nichols ranks third on the team and is tied for 28th overall after carding rounds of 78-80-158. Nichols did not have a birdie in either round but was able to record 12 pars in the morning and 11 in the second round.

Lisa Persson is tied for 43rd and Lexie Hall is tied for 52nd place. Persson shot 81-81-162 while Hall came in at 79-85-164.

Gonzaga opened up a 16-stroke lead in the team standings. The Bulldogs totaled 295-298-593 and are followed by UC Irvine (609). Long Beach State and Portland State are tied for third at 618 with Sacramento State and Santa Clara each two strokes behind.

The Hornets rank second among the four Big Sky Conference schools in the tournament. Along with PSU, Montana (649) and Northern Colorado are also competing. Montana's score also included a pair of holes-in-one during the day.

The final round of the 54-hole tournament will take place on Tuesday.
