Persson Wins Firestone Grill College Invitational; Team Places Second

NIPOMO, Calif. — Lisa Persson claimed her first individual title as a Hornet and Tiffany Nichols tied for third to lead the Sacramento State women's golf team to a second-place finish at the Firestone Grill College Invitational.

Persson, who transferred to Sacramento State from Shorter University, shot 71-72-75-218 to finish one stroke ahead of Cal State Northridge's Clariss Guce. The Jonkoping, Sweden, native becomes the first Hornet woman to win a tournament since Samantha Saffold finished first at the Cal Poly Lamkin Grip Challenge in March of 2011.

Persson's 54-hole total of 218 is the seventh-lowest in school history. Her effort comes just one tournament after she recorded a hole-in-one and shot 69 at the WSU Cougar Cup.

Nichols, who is also new to the team this fall after transferring from San Jose State, shot 75-74-72-221 which ranks eighth in the Hornet record book. Her 1-over par round of 72 in the third round was the best on the team.

Sacramento State finished second with a three-round total of 911. Host Cal Poly held on to its first-day lead to shoot 901.

Sophomore Lexie Hall tied for 17th with rounds of 78-79-79-236. Freshman Natalie Bodnar carded rounds of 82-79-77-238 to tie for 19th and sophomore Sagee Palavivatana was 28th after shooting 82-85-77-244. Playing as an individual, Rockelle Sande tied for 34th place at 79-86-88-253.

The Hornets return to action on Oct. 22 at the SCU Colby Invitational hosted by Santa Clara.
