Women's Golf Back in Action at the Folino Invitational

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. — The Sacramento State women's golf team played its first round of the spring season and finds itself tied for sixth place after the first round of the Folino Invitational on Sunday.

The Hornets shot 315 and are 12 strokes off the pace of Gonzaga. The field includes three of the Big Sky Conference's top teams and each are within three strokes of one another with Portland State (312), Montana (314) and Sacramento State.

Sophomore Sagee Palavivatana led the Hornets with a round of 76. Palavivatana began with consecutive bogeys but then parred seven of her next eight holes. Bogies on Nos. 11 and 12 were followed by a birdie on the par-3 13th. She ended with four pars and a bogey over her final five holes.

Sophomore Lexie Hall is one stroke behind Palavivatana and is tied for 15th place. Hall was 4-over through her first five holes but birdied the par-5 6th hole. After making the turn at 4-over, she began the back nine with birdies on the par-4 10th and the par-5 11th. Hall was 4-over through her final seven holes with four pars, two bogeys and a double-bogey.

Tiffany Nichols carded a round of 79 and is tied for 28th place. Nichols had a birdie on the par-3 13th, 10 pars, six bogeys and a triple-bogey on the par-4 10th during her round.

Lisa Persson overcame a rough start which saw her at 10-over through her first seven holes and finished her round at 12-over (83). Person began her comeback with a birdie on the par-4 8th. She then played the next eight-holes at 1-over before ending with bogeys on Nos. 17 and 18.

Senior Kercia Brakel had the best start on the team, with a par on No. 1 and a birdie of the par-4 2nd. From that point, she added four pars, eight bogeys, two double-bogeys and a triple-bogey.

Cal State Fullerton's Kirsten Aiu holds a one-stroke lead in the individual standings. Aiu is followed by five golfers who shot 74, including three from Gonzaga.

The tournament continues with the second round on Monday before wrapping up with a final 18 holes on Tuesday.
