ROWING BEATS LOYOLA MARYMOUNT, FALLS TO GONZAGA

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – The Sacramento State women’s varsity eight defeated Loyola Marymount and lost to defending WIRA-champion Gonzaga in the first day of the WCC Challenge Saturday at Redwood Shores.

In the morning against Loyola Marymount, the Hornets’ varsity eight crossed the 2,000-meter finish line with a time of 7:42.6, almost two seconds faster than the Lions (7:44.3). Later in the afternoon, Sacramento State’s top boat (7:49.1) fell to Gonzaga (7:30.5). With the split, the varsity eight’s dual-meet record now stands at 4-1 this season.

Head coach Mike Connors used the following varsity eight lineup for the first time this season: Chanel Patterson at bow, Rebecca Hurtt at the two seat, Susan Kulzer at three, Sarah McKenzie at four, Adelle Reimer at five, Jennifer Boyer at six, Katie Litvinchuk at seven, Stephanie Brow at stroke and Christy Clifton at coxswain. Hurtt replaced the injured Jamie Weatherfield in the lineup.

Sacramento State’s second varsity eight was also victorious against Loyola Marymount, racing to a winning time of 7:50.0, followed by the Lions (8:09.0). The Hornets’ second varsity eight is now 3-0 in dual meets this season.

The team’s second varsity eight lineup consisted of Kira Morrison at bow, Sarah Karling at two, Steffanie Jakovac at three, Ashley Carl at four, Lauren Coats at five, Brittney Claycamp at six, Laura Harder at seven, Megan Foley at stroke and Nicole Reyes at coxswain.

The Hornets’ novice eight split two races during the day, beating Saint Mary’s and losing to Loyola Marymount. Against the Gaels, Sacramento State (8:27.7) won by more than 37 seconds as Saint Mary’s finished with a time of 9:06.4. In the race against Loyola Marymount, the Hornets experienced breakage in the boat and finished the last 1,500 meters with just six rowers. The Lions won with a time of 8:25.9, as Sacramento State crossed the finish line with a time of 10:01.8.

Sacramento State''s novice eight lineup consisted of Erin Gordon at bow, Monica Kautz at the two seat, Shannon Wagner at three, Coralie Wilhite at four, Allison King at five, Lauren Heselbarth at six, Heather Pryor at seven, Sarah Read at stroke and Cecilia Vina at coxswain.

Sacramento State returns to the water for the second day of the WCC Challenge on Sunday, March 16, as the team faces San Diego in the varsity eight and second varsity eight competitions.
