SACRAMENTO STATE'S VARSITY EIGHT
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State posted victories over UC Davis in the varsity eight, novice eight and varsity four competitions Saturday morning in women’s rowing action at the Port of Sacramento. The Aggies won the novice four competition.
The victory in the varsity eight allowed Sacramento State to claim its 12th Jean Runyon Cup, a prize both schools have battled for annually since 1997. Sacramento State now owns a 12-4 record against UC Davis over that time. The Aggies’ rowing squad had been a varsity sport until 2010, and is currently in its second year of club status.
In the varsity eight, Sacramento State’s 2,000-meter time of 6:50.48 was nearly three seconds faster than UC Davis’ time of 6:53.42. The Aggies did not compete a second varsity eight, so the Hornets’ JV8 made its entry in the novice eight competition, and won that race handily with a time of 7:07.79, followed by the Hornets’ novice eight (7:16.01), UC Davis A (7:21.68) and UC Davis B (8:05.09).
The Hornets’ varsity four’s time of 7:55.66 was more than 11 seconds faster than the Aggies’ time of 8:07.36.
Complete results from each of the four races today can be found below.
Sacramento State returns to the water next weekend when its hosts the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships on April 28-29. The WIRA’s serve as Sacramento State’s conference championship event, and is the team’s biggest regatta of the season in magnitude. The Hornets will attempt to win their fourth team title in the last seven years.
