ROWING CRUISES TO A WINNING TIME OF 6:46.5, EASILY HANDLES SAN DIEGO STATE
3/28/2009
GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State’s varsity eight rowed to a season-high winning time of 6:46.5 over 2,000 meters, easily defeating San Diego State (6:59.5) in women’s rowing action Saturday morning at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.
In fact, the Hornets won five of the six races between the two teams today, with each of those victories coming by at least six seconds. Sacramento State’s varsity eight, which improved to 7-0 in dual meets this spring, avenged last year’s loss to San Diego State after defeating the Aztecs today by 13 seconds.
Sacramento State was also victorious by open water in the novice eight competition despite catching a crab towards the end of the race. The Hornets’ winning time was 7:07.4, followed by the Aztecs’ time of 7:15.3. Sacramento State’s novice eight, which also avenged a loss last season to San Diego State, improved to 6-0 in dual meets this season.
Sacramento State’s second novice eight (7:40.5, 6.1-second victory), varsity four (7:52.5, 10.5-second victory) and novice four (8:25.6, 14.6-second victory) were also victorious in their respective races today against San Diego State.
"Today was a great day for Sacramento State," Hornet head coach Mike Connors said. "The novices won all their races, including a convincing win over the defending Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association champs (San Diego State).
"The varsity eight had a solid race, beating a quality WIRA contender. The only disappointment was the second varsity eight, but unfortunately, we had to make a lot of changes in the lineup due to some people being out and it showed."
The only loss suffered by the Hornets came in the second varsity eight competition as San Diego State’s winning time of 7:05.8 was nearly seven seconds faster than Sacramento State’s time of 7:12.7. The loss was the first of the season for Sacramento State’s second varsity eight as the boat fell to 3-1 in duals this spring.
Sacramento State will make its first road trip of the spring when the team travels to the San Diego Crew Classic next weekend (April 4-5). The team does not return home until April 18-19 when it hosts the Lake Natoma Invitational.
