ROWING VICTORIOUS IN FIVE RACES AT THE SACRAMENTO STATE INVITATIONAL
3/14/2009
GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State’s women’s varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight, second novice eight, second novice eight and novice four boats were all winners in their respective races Saturday morning at the Sacramento State Rowing Invitational on Lake Natoma.
Throughout the day, teams had to deal with either strong cross or head winds, including major head winds for the fours races. Along with the Hornets, the Sacramento State Invitational included crews from Santa Clara, Humboldt State, Sonoma State, Saint Mary’s, Cal, Mills College and Cal Maritime. The Hornets competed in eight races during the day, and the only events the team did not finish first were in the varsity four (second place), second varsity four (second) and coxswain four (third) competitions. The coxswain four was a first-time event at the Sacramento State Invitational where each boat is made up of four coxswains (doing the rowing) and one rower (serving as the coxswain).
In the varsity eight race, Sacramento State battled strong cross winds to finish with a 2,000-meter winning time of 6:51.4, followed by Saint Mary’s (6:57.7) and Humboldt State (7:16.8) to round out the top three places in the six-boat field. The Hornets’ varsity eight improved its dual-meet record this season to 6-0 with the victory.
“I was proud of the varsity eight because they were down a good portion of the race and showed the ability to battle back and win,” Sacramento State head coach Mike Connors said. “Saint Mary’s was very aggressive early, and we responded in the second half of the race to pass them and win by a decent margin.”
In the second varsity eight competition, the Hornets posted a winning time of 7:02.7, followed by Sonoma State’s varsity eight boat (7:29.5) and Humboldt State (7:42.1). The Hornets’ second varsity eight is now 3-0 this season in dual-meet action.
In the novice eight competition, Sacramento State was victorious with a time of 7:10.5, followed by Humboldt State (7:45.5), Santa Clara (8:01.9), Sonoma State (8:07.7) and Mills College (9:15.2). The Hornets’ novice eight is now 5-0 in dual meets.
The Hornets’ second novice eight (8:12.3) and novice four (8:54.4) were also victorious in their respective races. Complete results from each of the women’s competitions as well as lineups can be found below.
Sacramento State is idle next week before returning to the water to host San Diego State on Saturday, March 28.
