ROWING TAKES HOME A PAIR OF SILVER MEDALS AT THE PACIFIC COAST ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS
5/17/2008
GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State competed two boats in Saturday’s Pacific Coast Rowing Championships (PCRC) on Lake Natoma, and both won silver medals. The Hornets placed second in the finals of both the collegiate novice four and open four events.
The PCRC’s are open to all schools and clubs in the West Region, which include any rowing institution located in the states of Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado and Arizona. A total of 15 schools were represented at the regatta today which offers individual championships in every collegiate rowing category not offered in tomorrow’s Pacific-10 Conference Championships.
In the open four, Loyola Marymount rowed to a winning time of 8:16.7 over 2,000 meters, followed by Sacramento State (8:20.3), Cal (8:24.1), Western Washington (8:27.2), USC (8:38.5) and UC San Diego (8:51.8).
In the collegiate novice four, UC San Diego posted a first-place time of 8:03.0, followed by the Hornets (8:08.4), UCLA (8:17.3), Oregon (9:08.8) and Sonoma State (9:17.9).
Sacramento State returns to the water tomorrow (Sunday, May 18) at Lake Natoma as the team will compete in the Pacific-10 Championships, which is open to the top 21 entrants for each of the four events (varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and varsity four) in the West Region.
The Hornets will compete boats in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight events. The team’s varsity eight needs to place at least fourth or fifth in tomorrow’s grand final to have a shot at an at-large berth into the NCAA Championships. Should the team fail to reach the grand final, the Hornets’ season would come to an end as the Pac-10 Championships signals the conclusion of the rowing regular season.
