GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Sacramento State and San Diego State split four races in women’s rowing action Saturday morning on Lake Natoma. San Diego State was victorious in the varsity eight and novice eight races, while the Hornets won the second varsity eight and varsity four competitions.
The Hornets’ top boat (varsity eight) lost for just the second time in dual meet action spanning the last five years. The loss dropped the team’s varsity eight to 35-2 since the beginning of the 2004 spring season. Sacramento State’s time of 6:53.7 over 2,000 meters was 4.7 seconds slower than San Diego State’s winning time of 6:49.0.
Sacramento State’s second varsity eight improved its duals record this season to 5-0 after posting a winning time of 7:04.2, followed by San Diego State (7:11.1). In the novice eight competition, San Diego State A raced to a winning time of 7:20.7, followed by San Diego State B (7:27.2) and Sacramento State (7:30.6). The Hornets’ novice eight dropped to 4-1 in duals this season with the loss.
In the varsity four, Sacramento State’s A boat won easily with a time of 7:56.9, followed by San Diego State (8:04.0) and Sacramento State B (8:30.4).
"I was pleased with our second varsity eight boat, but the varsity eight was not aggressive enough despite a couple lineup changes," Sacramento State head coach Mike Connors said. "We were also pretty sloppy with our technique and need to clean that up if we want to have a good showing in San Diego next weekend."
Sacramento State returns to the water next weekend (Saturday-Sunday, April 5-6) when the team competes in the San Diego Crew Classic.
