ROWING VICTORIOUS IN FIVE RACES AT THE SACRAMENTO STATE INVITATIONAL

3/15/2008

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Sacramento State’s women’s varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight, and both varsity eight boats were winners in their respective races Saturday morning at the Sacramento State Rowing Invitational on Lake Natoma.

Along with the Hornets, the Sacramento State Invitational included Santa Clara, Humboldt State, Sonoma State, Saint Mary’s, Cal Lightweights, Pacific and Mills College. The Hornets competed in six races during the day, and the only event the team did not finish first was the novice four.

“With the exception of the varsity eight, I thought we raced pretty well today as a team,” Sacramento State head coach Mike Connors said. “In the varsity eight, we need to be more focused and aggressive in the middle of the race course, as we had opportunities to increase our lead, but did not take advantage.”

In the varsity eight, Sacramento State battled a cross headwind and delivered a winning time of 7:01.8, followed by Saint Mary’s (7:03.4), Santa Clara (7:12.0), Humboldt State (7:29.4) and Mills (7:50.2). The varsity eight improved its dual meet record this season to 5-0.

In the second varsity eight, the Hornets’ time of 7:04.7 was more than 15 seconds faster than second-place Saint Mary’s (7:20.0). Rounding out third and fourth place, respectively, were Humboldt State (7:24.2) and Santa Clara (7:25.1). The Hornets’ second varsity eight is now 4-0 in duals this season.

In the novice eight, the Hornets rowed to a first-place time of 7:39.7, followed by Sonoma State (7:43.1), Humboldt State (9:00.5) and Mills (9:21.7). Like the second varsity eight, Sacramento State’s novice eight improved its dual-meet record to 4-0.

Sacramento State’s varsity four boats rowed to easy victories, with the A boat winning by more than 24 seconds, and the B boat winning by 15 seconds in their respective races.

The Hornets return to action in two weeks when the team hosts San Diego State on Saturday, March 29.
