ROWING TAKES HOME A PAIR OF SILVER MEDALS AT THE PACIFIC COAST ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State competed two boats in Saturday’s Pacific Coast Rowing Championships (PCRC) on Lake Natoma, and both won medals. The Hornets won silver in the open eight competition, and freshman Natalie Thomas also won a silver medal in the open single event.
The PCRC’s are open to all schools and clubs in the West Region, which includes any rowing institution located in the states of Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado and Arizona. A total of 17 schools were represented at the regatta today which offers individual championships in every collegiate rowing category not offered in tomorrow’s Pacific-10 Conference Championships.
In the open eight, the Hornets raced to a second place time of 7:30.5 over 2,000 meters, trailing the Lions Rowing Club’s first-place time of 7:19.0. UC San Diego (7:35.9) finished third to round out the medal winners in the six-boat field.
Thomas took home silver in a field that included collegiate scullers from Loyola Marymount, UC San Diego and Sonoma State. Thomas raced to a time of 10:27.7 over 2,000 meters, finishing 34 seconds ahead of UC San Diego’s third-place collegiate time of 11:01.7.
Sacramento State returns to the water tomorrow (Sunday, May 13) at Lake Natoma as the team will compete in the Pacific-10 Championships, which is open to the top 21 entrants for each event in the West Region. The Hornets’ varsity eight needs to place at least fourth in tomorrow’s grand final to have a shot at a berth into the NCAA Championships. Should the team fail to reach the grand final, the Hornets’ season would come to an end as the Pac-10 Championships signals the conclusion of the rowing regular season. Sacramento State will have entries in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and varsity four events.
