WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento State women’s rowing team kicked off the 2006-07 season in impressive fashion after winning gold in the varsity four competition at the Head of Port of Sacramento Sunday morning.
The Hornets had three boats finish among the top seven in the 12-boat field, including Sacramento State’s A boat winning gold with a time of 19:14, 33 seconds faster than the nearest competitor. Cal’s A boat finished second with a time of 19:47, followed by Cal B (19:49), Cal C (19:49), Sonoma State (19:51), Sacramento State C (20:06) and Sacramento State B (20:10).
The varsity four was the only race the Hornets competed in as the Head of the Port marked the first regatta of the year for Sacramento State. The defending Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association champions, the Hornets have three more fall races, including next weekend’s Head of the Charles in Boston.
Today’s varsity four championship boat, featuring Ashley Platner at coxswain, Aimee Chenard at stroke, Constance Deslauriers at three, Janine LaCrosse at two and Kristin Carlson at bow, will be competing at the Head of the Charles next week.
