GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Senior Coralie Wilhite and junior Constance Deslauriers each won gold medals in the single scull events and Sacramento State’s second novice eight won a silver medal at the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships (PCRC’s) Saturday at Lake Natoma. The Hornets also placed fourth in the varsity lightweight eight and the novice four races, as well as a fifth-place finish in the open four.
After winning a bronze in the same event last year, Deslauriers won gold in the open single event today as the Montreal, Quebec, native finished with a time of 8:47.7. Wilhite, who is a native of West Point, Calif., posted the fastest time in the collegiate single event with a time of 9:23.7.
The Hornets’ second novice eight placed second with a time of 7:26.0 over 2,000 meters, trailing Cal (7:00.8) and placing ahead of Sonoma State (8:04.7) to round out the top three.
In the varsity lightweight eight competition, Central Florida raced to a winning time of 7:01.5, followed by Stanford (7:09.4), Cal (7:17.3) and Sacramento State (7:22.2).
The Hornets’ novice four (7:59.6) trailed Stanford (7:37.9), Loyola Marymount (7:49.0) and Saint Mary’s (7:52.9). In the open four, Sacramento State’s mark of 8:10.1 was the race’s fifth-fastest time.
The PCRC’s are open to all schools in the West Region, which include any rowing institution located in the states of Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado and Arizona. A total of 16 schools were represented at the regatta which offers individual championships in every collegiate rowing category not offered in Sunday’s Pacific-10 Conference Championships.
Sacramento State returns to the water tomorrow (Sunday, May 14) at Lake Natoma as the team will compete in the Pacific-10 Championships, which is open to the top 21 entrants for each event in the West Region. The Hornets’ varsity eight needs to place at least fourth in tomorrow’s grand final to have a shot at a berth into the NCAA Championships. Should the team fail to reach the grand final, the Hornets’ season would come to an end tomorrow as the Pac-10 Championships signals the conclusion of the rowing regular season.
