WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento State women’s rowing team defeated UC Davis in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and novice four competitions to take home the Jean Runyon Cup for the eighth-consecutive year Saturday morning at the Port of Sacramento.The Hornets and Aggies race each year for the Jean Runyon Cup, and Sacramento State’s top boat has not lost to UC Davis since the 1998 season. The Jean Runyon Cup, which both schools began competing for in 1997, is awarded to the fastest boat in the varsity eight competition.
Sacramento State was victorious in all four races at this morning’s regatta, while winning three of the four races by more than five seconds. In addition, the Hornets improved their large lead in the Causeway Cup standings over UC Davis to 58.75-31.25 with meetings in track, softball and baseball remaining between the two schools. The Causeway Cup is an all-sports competition between Sacramento State and UC Davis.
The day began with varsity eight competition as Sacramento State raced to a winning time of 7:01.4 over 2,000 meters, almost six seconds faster than UC Davis’ time of 7:07.3. The Hornets’ top boat improved to 6-0 this year in dual-meet action, and has now won 21-straight duals dating back to 2003.
In the second varsity eight race, the Hornets finished with a time of 7:10.3, edging UC Davis’ time of 7:11.5. Sacramento State’s second varsity eight moved its dual meet record this year to 4-1 and 14-1 dating back to 2003. In addition, the Hornets have been victorious over the Aggies in the second varsity eight competition five-straight years.
In the novice eight race, Sacramento State won by more than 18 seconds, posting a first-place time of 7:22.14, followed by Sacramento State’s second novice eight (7:40.20) and UC Davis (7:40.69). The Hornets’ novice eight improved its dual-meet record to 7-0 this year and the team has won 17-straight duals dating back to last year.
In the novice four race, the Hornets placed first with a time of 8:06.46, followed by UC Davis A (8:25.97) and UC Davis B (8:46.66).
Sacramento State returns to action next weekend as the team will compete at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships in Oakridge, Tenn.
