GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Sacramento State women’s rowing team handily won the varsity eight, novice eight and varsity four competitions over Santa Clara to win its third-consecutive Jim Farwell Cup Saturday morning on Lake Natoma at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.The Jim Farwell Cup, which the Hornets and Broncos began competing for in 2004, is named after the former longtime Santa Clara rower and coach who established the women’s rowing program at Santa Clara. The regatta marked the beginning of the spring season for both teams. The Farwell Cup is given to the team that wins thee varsity eight competition.
The Hornets’ varsity eight has not lost a dual meet since the 2003 season and improved its winning streak in duals to 16-consecutive victories. The novice eight ran its dual-meet winning streak to 11 straight after posting a perfect 10-0 record last season. In fact, Sacramento State’s varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight combined for a 24-0 record last year in dual meet action. The Hornets’ second varsity eight competed in today’s varsity eight competition, which doesn’t count towards the team’s dual meet record.
In the varsity eight competition, Sacramento State posted a winning time of 6:47.2 over 2,000 meters, followed by the Hornets’ second varsity eight (6:59.6) and Santa Clara (7:09.2). In the novice eight race, the Hornets’ A boat won with a time of 7:16.4, followed by Sacramento State B (7:32.5) and Santa Clara (7:40.9).
The varsity four competition saw Sacramento State A race to a winning time of 7:36.4, followed by Sacramento State B (7:42.6), Santa Clara A (7:49.5), Sacramento State C (8:04.0) and Santa Clara B (8:05.0).
Santa Clara won the novice four competition with a time of 8:18.0. Sacramento State’s A boat finished second with a time of 8:26.6 and Sacramento State B finished at 8:41.2.
The Hornets return to the water next week as the team hosts the Sacramento State Invitational on Saturday, March 11, at Lake Natoma. The Sacramento State Invitational will feature the following schools: Sacramento State, Humboldt State, Saint Mary''s, Sonoma State, Cal Lightweights and Stanford Lightweights.
