ROWING POSTS ITS BEST SAN DIEGO CREW CLASSIC FINISH SINCE 2000

4/3/2005

SAN DIEGO - The Sacramento State women’s varsity eight placed third in the Cal Cup Grand Final Sunday afternoon at the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay. The finish was the highest for the Hornets since the team won the event in 2000. In fact, Sacramento State had failed to reach the Cal Cup grand final the previous four years prior to today’s bronze medal.

The Hornets’ varsity eight posted a 2,000-meter time of 6:54.76, just behind first-place finishing San Diego State (6:52.40) and Central Florida (6:54.25). Miami finished with a time of 6:56.92, followed by fifth-place UC Davis (6:57.47) and Kansas State (7:07.50). Sacramento State advanced to the grand final after finishing first in its heat yesterday.

In the Women’s JV Petite Final, Sacramento State’s second varsity eight (7:13.63) finished fifth behind Oregon State (7:04.50), Tennessee (7:07.35), Notre Dame (7:11.55) and Miami (7:12.53). Kansas State placed sixth with a time of 7:16.28. The Hornets’ second varsity eight advanced to the petite final after finishing fourth in yesterday’s heat.

In the Women’s Collegiate Novice Petite Final, the Hornets raced to a third-place time of 7:29.58 behind Notre Dame (7:19.49) and USC (7:25.04). UC San Diego placed fourth with a time of 7:37.38, followed by UC Davis (7:37.51) and Loyola Marymount (7:51.58). The Hornets’ novice eight, which narrowly missed advancing to the grand final, reached the petite final after finishing third in yesterday’s heat.
