ROWING’S VARSITY EIGHT PLACES FOURTH IN PETITE FINAL OF THE PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS
GOLD RIVER, Calif. - Cal was victorious in both the women’s varsity eight and second varsity eight grand finals, while Washington took home the gold medal in the novice eight competition at the Pacific-10 Conference Rowing Championships Sunday afternoon at the Lake Natoma.Cal’s varsity eight won the grand final for the second-consecutive season while the Bears’ second varsity eight won for the third-straight year. USC was victorious in the varsity four competition.
Sacramento State, which fielded boats in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight competitions, reached the petite final in each event. The Hornets’ varsity eight placed fourth in its petite final while both the second varsity eight and novice eight boats placed second in their respective petite finals. The top three boats in each of the morning’s qualifying heats advanced to the grand final while places 4-6 in each qualifying heat reached the petite final. The Pacific-10 Championships is limited to the top 21 entrants for each event in the West Region, which includes each of the seven Pac-10 rowing institutions (Cal, Washington State, Stanford, Oregon State, Washington, UCLA and USC; Oregon is club status).
In addition, the Pac-10''s mark the end of the women''s rowing regular season. Since the advent of the NCAA Championships in 1997, holding the Pac-10''s on the final weekend allows the selection committee to compare virtually all the West Coast (Pac-10 and non Pac-10) crews under comparable race conditions. With no time standard to meet, boats competing in the NCAA Women''s Rowing Championships will be named by a selection committee this Tuesday, May 17.
Sacramento State’s year comes to an end today, but the Hornets still enjoyed a successful season:
• The Hornets’ varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight combined to post the best dual-meet record in school history (24-0). The varsity eight went 8-0, the second varsity eight 6-0 and the novice eight 10-0.
• Undefeated in dual meets over the last two seasons (15-0), Sacramento State’s varsity eight won all but one of their dual-meet races by at least eight seconds.
• Against UC Davis on April 23, the varsity eight posted a time of 6:40.5, the team’s fastest mark since 2000. The varsity eight’s third-place finish in the Cal Cup was also the team’s best finish since 2000.
• The Hornets’ second varsity eight is 10-0 over the last two years in dual meets and has medaled at the WIRA Championships each of the last four years. The boat won all six of its dual meets by at least eight seconds this year and won a silver medal at the WIRA Championships two weeks ago.
• The Hornets’ novice eight posted the best season in school history, winning a gold medal at the WIRA Championships for the first time ever. The novice eight failed to reach the grand final at WIRA’s every year until winning a silver medal in 2004 and a gold this year.
• The novice eight defeated UC Davis, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, Saint Mary’s, Sonoma State, Humboldt State, Cal Lightweights and Stanford Lightweights all by at least 10 seconds.
