ROWING'S VARSITY EIGHT SHINES AGAIN, ADVANCES TO SAN DIEGO CREW CLASSIC GRAND FINAL

SAN DIEGO - The Sacramento State women''s varsity eight won their heat in the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay and advanced to tomorrow''s Cal Cup Grand Final. The Hornets, who will attempt to win their first Cal Cup Grand Final championship since 2000, will face Central Florida, UC Davis, San Diego State, Kansas State and Miami in Sunday''s grand final.

In the team''s morning heat, Sacramento State''s varsity eight posted a winning time of 7:06.40 over 2,000 meters, bettering Miami (7:09.38), Temple (7:18.97), St. Joseph''s (7:20.08) and UC Irvine (7:33.81). The top two boats in each of the three heats advanced to the Cal Cup grand final, which is scheduled to take place at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. The third and fourth-place teams advanced to the petite final, and the fifth and sixth place teams advanced to the Third Level Final.

Sacramento State''s second varsity eight finished fourth in its heat and the Hornets'' novice eight finished third in its heat as both teams advanced to tomorrow''s petite finals in their respective events. In the Hornets'' second varsity eight race (Women''s JV, Heat A), Sacramento State (7:17.18) finished behind rowing powers Cal (6:58.80), Texas (7:02.90) and Oregon State (7:04.99). Central Florida finished fifth (7:30.57) and San Diego "B" placed sixth (8:03.74). The Hornets'' second varsity eight will compete in its petite final tomorrow at 10:20 a.m.

In the Women''s Collegiate Novice (Heat C) competition, Sacramento State finished third (7:18.02) and narrowly missed advancing to tomorrow''s grand final. Texas finished first with a time of 7:11.27 and Washington State took second with a time of 7:15.11. The Hornets would have finished the race with a much better time, but caught a crab with just 500 meters to go in the race. UC Davis finished fourth with a time of 7:24.45, followed by San Diego (7:25.21), UC Irvine (7:36.51) and Claremont (8:08.18). The Hornets'' novice eight will compete in tomorrow''s petite final at 8:15 a.m.

After competing in tomorrow''s second day of the San Diego Crew Classic, Sacramento State returns to the water on Saturday, April 16, as the team competes at the Knecht Cup Regatta in Camden, N.J.

Varsity Eight Lineup: Cecilia Vina at coxswain, Laura Harder at stroke, Brittney Claycamp at seven, Sara Crain at six, Janine LaCrosse at five, Steffanie Jakovac at four, Aimee Chenard at three, Ashley Wayman at two and Ashley Roundtree at bow.

Second Varsity Eight Lineup: Megan Williams at coxswain, Ashley Borelli at stroke, Courtney Buehler at seven, Jamie Weatherfield at six, Catherine Woerner at five, Jacqueline Sechser at four, Constance Deslauriers at three, Jenna Duale at two and Teresa Bitcon at bow.

Novice Eight Lineup: Ashley Platner at coxswain, Ashley Loucks at stroke, Krista Hill at seven, Lenore Meehan at six, Meghyn Cox at five, Kristin Carlson at four, Amy Justice at three, Megan Maurer at two and Justine Fernandez at bow.

Sacramento State also fielded an alumni boat which placed third in its heat. The makeup of the boat, which was comprised of former Hornet rowers, included Christy Clifton at coxswain, Stephanie Brow at stroke, Megan Spitze at seven, Megan Warren at six, Abigail Smyth at five, current assistant coach Carrie Hagen at four, Cassandra Cunningham at three, Tammy Wood-Sand at two and Alicia Weber at bow.
