RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – The Sacramento State women''s rowing squad opened the 2004-05 season with a third-place finish in both the Collegiate Novice Eight and Open Eight events, and a first-place finish in the Lightweight Four event at the Head of the American Saturday afternoon at Lake Natoma.In the Open Eight race, the Hornets finished the three-mile course with a time of 17:35, tied for third with USC "B" (17:35). Cal "A" finished first with a time of 16:58, followed by USC "A" (17:02), Sacramento State "A", USC "B" and Cal "B" (17:39) to round out the top five. Sacramento State''s time of 17:35 was 49 seconds faster than the team finished in the same event last year. Sacramento State''s "B" boat finished ninth with a time of 18:51 as a total of 17 boats competed in the Open Eight competition, including Sacramento State''s alumni boat.
In the novice collegiate eight event, USC raced to a first-place time of 18:15, followed by Cal (18:26), Sacramento State (19:35), Cal Lightweights "A" (20:39) and Saint Mary''s "A" (21:51) to round out the top five.
The lightweight four competition saw the Hornets finish with a time of 21:41, one minute and 30 seconds faster than second-place Zlac Rowing Club (23:11). Stanford''s lightweight crew posted a third-place time of 23:33.
Today''s competition marked the first of two fall races for Sacramento State as the squad travels to Newport Beach, Calif., on Saturday, Nov. 7, to compete at the Newport Fall Regatta. After next weekend''s race, the Hornets do not compete again until they open the spring season on March 5 in a dual meet with Santa Clara at Lake Natoma.
