ROWING CLAIMS FIRST-EVER DAD VAIL REGATTA CHAMPIONSHIP

5/8/2004

Sacramento State claims the Evelyn Bergman Trophy with today''s championship
PHILADELPHIA -- The Sacramento State women’s varsity eight posted a 2,000-meter winning time of 6:54.46 to claim the Women’s Varsity Heavyweight Eight championship at the Dad Vail Regatta Saturday afternoon on the Schuylkill River.

With the victory, the Hornets, who placed first in their semifinal race earlier in the day, claimed the Evelyn Bergman Trophy for the first time in school history. Sacramento State had placed second in the petite final of the same event last year at the Dad Vail Regatta.

The Hornets placed first in all three races during the two-day event, culminating with this afternoon’s championship. Sacramento State was the only team to finish below the seven-minute mark in the final, as Villanova placed second with a time of 7:01.94, followed by UC Davis (7:02.20), St. Joseph’s (7:02.43), Fordham (7:10.25) and Temple (7:12.65).

In today’s semifinal race, the Hornets raced to a time of 6:33.2, followed by Temple (6:39.4), San Diego (6:44.2), UConn (6:52.2), LaSalle (6:55.3) and Bucknell (7:12.7).

The Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, with over 100 colleges and Universities from the U.S. and Canada.

Today’s championship continues an impressive season for Sacramento State’s varsity eight boat as the team has posted a 7-0 dual-meet record, including a silver medal at last weekend’s Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships.

The Hornets’ varsity eight and the rest of the team will compete again next weekend as Sacramento State hosts the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships (Saturday, May 15) and the Pacific-10 Championships (Sunday, May 16).

Today’s varsity eight lineup marked the fifth-straight race in which head coach Mike Connors has used the same lineup. It consisted of: Courtney Buehler at bow, Ashley Carl at the two seat, Sara Crain at three, Adelle Reimer at four, Laura Harder at five, Brittney Claycamp at six, Erika Bracy at seven, Stephanie Brow at stroke and Christy Clifton at coxswain.
