ROWING’S VARSITY EIGHT PLACES FIRST IN ITS HEAT, ADVANCES TO CREW CLASSIC GRAND FINAL
Sacramento State's varsity eight placed first in its heat and will race for the Cal Cup title tomorrow
SAN DIEGO – The Sacramento State women’s varsity eight posted the fastest time in its heat during the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic Saturday morning at Crown Point Shores Park in Mission Bay. With the victory, the boat advanced to Sunday morning’s Cal Cup grand final.
In tomorrow’s grand final, which takes place at 10 a.m., the Hornets’ top boat will face Kansas State, Tulsa, Georgetown, Alabama and Stanford’s lightweight crew. The Hornets placed third in the Cal Cup grand final last year, second in 2009, fourth in both 2008 and 2006, and third in 2005. The team is seeking its first Cal Cup championship since 2000.
The Hornets won their heat with a time of 6:59.1 over 2,000 meters, followed by Georgetown (7:00.85), Victoria (7:01.29), Saint Mary’s (7:02.16), Fordham (7:02.24) and UC Davis (7:06.61). The top two teams in each of the three varsity eight heats advanced to the grand final, and the third and fourth place teams advanced to the petite final. The remaining boats advanced to the third final.
Racing among a powerhouse-packed field, Sacramento State’s second varsity eight placed third in its heat, and advanced to tomorrow morning’s Collegiate JV petite final (7:40 a.m.) where the team will face Iowa Alabama, Oklahoma and Oregon State. The Hornets’ time of 6:58.58 trailed both USC (6:41.60) and Wisconsin (6:43.49), but was faster than both Oklahoma (7:03.66) and Georgetown (7:10.96) in its heat.
Sacramento State’s novice eight was in third place midway through its heat, but caught a boat-stopping crab which essentially ended any chance of advancing to a final. The Hornets’ boat actually turned sideways after the crab, and by the time the crew straightened things out and crossed the finish line, no time was taken. No third-level final is offered for the novice eight competition, so the Hornets’ novice crew saw their weekend end with this morning’s race.
