ROWING WRAPS UP FIRST DAY OF THE LAKE NATOMA INVITATIONAL
4/17/2010
GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Sacramento State’s women’s varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and varsity four each competed today in the first day of the Lake Natoma Invitational at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.
The two-day, nine-team regatta features a powerhouse lineup that includes five nationally ranked teams. Among those schools are second-ranked Cal, third-ranked Stanford, 13th-ranked Washington State, 14th-ranked Wisconsin and 17th-ranked Tennessee. In addition, three other teams are currently receiving votes, but not ranked in the top 20 comprised of Louisville, Minnesota and Texas. Sacramento State, which is hosting the regatta along with Cal, is also a part of the field.
All nine schools competed in a morning and afternoon session, and were grouped into Sunday’s grand finals, petite finals or third-level finals based on today’s performance. Each heat during both the morning and afternoon sessions included three boats.
The varsity eight grand final, tomorrow morning’s biggest race in magnitude, will take place at 9:40 a.m., and feature Cal, Stanford and Washington State.
Sacramento State’s varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four will each race in third-level finals tomorrow morning against Minnesota and Texas. The Hornets’ varsity four will race 8:20 a.m., the second varsity eight at 8:50 a.m., and the varsity eight at 9:20 a.m.
The Hornets’ novice eight placed second in its morning heat with a time of 7:24.19, and will race in tomorrow’s petite final at 8 a.m. against Cal’s second novice eight.
Sacramento State’s varsity eight posted times of 6:48:30 in the morning, and 7:11.06 in the afternoon, but both times were only good enough for third place in the three-team field. The Hornets’ second varsity eight posted times of 6:59.26 and 7:21.80, good for third place in both heats. The Hornets’ varsity four placed second in its morning heat (7:51.10) and third (8:11.95) its afternoon heat.
