ROWING KICKS OFF FALL SEASON AT THE HEAD OF THE AMERICAN
10/24/2009
GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Sacramento State women’s rowing team took home a fifth place and a pair of sixth place finishes in its three events during the Head of the American Saturday morning on Lake Natoma.
Today marked the first of two fall regattas the Hornets will compete, including the Newport Fall Regatta next weekend.
Today’s racing took place over a three-mile course with a time trial start format. Sacramento State competed two boats in the novice collegiate eight event (13-boat field), three boats in the collegiate pair (11-boat field) and three more entries in the collegiate four (19-boat field).
In the novice collegiate eight, Sacramento State’s A boat raced to a fifth-place time of 20:38, trailing Stanford (18:25), Cal B (18:38), San Diego State (18:42) and Cal’s A boat (18:50), respectively. The Hornets’ B boat finished seventh with a time of 21:50.
In the collegiate pair, boats from Stanford and Cal made up the top five times, followed by Sacramento State A (21:15), Sacramento State B (21:46), Cal C (21:46) and Sacramento State C (22:09), respectively.
In the collegiate four, the Hornets’ A boat (20:07), B boat (20:30) and C boat (21:30) finished sixth, eighth and 14th, respectively. Cal B, USC A, Cal D, Stanford A and Loyola Marymount finished with the top five times, respectively.
"Today was an opportunity to get our new rowers some racing experience," Sacramento State head coach Mike Connors said. "Given the fact that both novice eights contained rowers who just began competing in the sport this fall, they faired well against the competition. The varsity raced in small boats, and in general, we performed well against some of the best teams in the country."
Sacramento State also had a novice four boat finish the course with a time of 23:10 as an unattached entry in the Women's Masters/Novice Collegiate Four competition.
Sacramento State wraps up its fall portion of the schedule on Sunday, Nov. 1, when the team travels to Newport Beach, Calif., to take part in the Newport Fall Regatta.
