ROWING COMPETES AT THE PACIFIC COAST ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State competed one boat in Saturday’s Pacific Coast Rowing Championships (PCRC’s) on Lake Natoma, and that crew (novice four) placed sixth in its final.
The PCRC’s are open to all schools and clubs in the West Region, which include any rowing institution located in the states of Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado and Arizona. A total of 14 schools were represented at the regatta today which offers individual championships in every collegiate rowing category not offered in tomorrow’s Pacific-10 Conference Championships.
Sacramento State was competing in arguably the most star-studded race of the day, which included four Pac-10 Conference schools. Cal raced to a first-place time of 7:52.6, followed by Western Washington (7:53.2), UCLA (7:58.9), Stanford (8:03.5), UC San Diego (8:11.2), Sacramento State (8:16.0) and Oregon (8:28.0).

Sacramento State returns to the water tomorrow (Sunday, May 17) at Lake Natoma as the team will compete in the Pacific-10 Championships, which is open to the top 21 entrants for each of the four events (varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and varsity four) in the West Region.
The Hornets will compete boats in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight events. The team’s varsity eight will attempt to reach the grand final of the event for the first time since 2000. That will be a tough task as the varsity eight field is loaded, featuring seven schools ranked among the top 20 crews in the nation. The Hornets will need to finish no lower than third in a heat (8:40 a.m.) which includes top-ranked Stanford, 12th-ranked USC, 13th-ranked Oregon State and Gonzaga to reach the grand final. The fourth and fifth place finishers in that heat will advance to a petite final.
Tomorrow’s Pac-10 Championships signals end the end of the rowing regular season. The event begins at 8 a.m. and runs until approximately 3:30 p.m. with a break from 9:20 a.m. until 1:10 p.m.
