ROWING HOSTS POWERHOUSE LINEUP AT THIS WEEKEND’S LAKE NATOMA INVITATIONAL

4/16/2009

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Hornet women’s rowing team will host the first-ever Lake Natoma Invitational this weekend at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center. Racing will take place this Saturday morning and afternoon, as well as Sunday morning.

The nine-team regatta will feature a powerhouse lineup that includes five nationally ranked varsity eight crews. Among those  crews coming to the Aquatic Center will be second-ranked Stanford, third-ranked Cal, 16th-ranked Wisconsin, 19th-ranked UCLA and 20th-ranked Minnesota. Tennessee, which had been ranked most of the season, is currently receiving votes. Other schools competing at the regatta will be host Sacramento State, Texas and Central Florida.

This weekend’s racing will mark the most star-studded regular-season regatta Sacramento State has hosted in recent memory. The Aquatic Center serves host to the Pacific-10 Conference Championships every year while also hosting the NCAA Championships five times since 1997, but not a regular-season regatta of this magnitude.

Saturday’s racing features a morning (8:20 a.m. until 10:10 a.m.) and afternoon (3 p.m.-4:30 p.m.) sessions. Sunday’s races will last from 8-9:50 a.m. with boats slotted into finals based on Saturday’s results. A complete schedule of both days can be found by clicking on the link above the story.

Sacramento State’s varsity eight will compete in two heats, with the first coming at 9:30 a.m. against Stanford and Minnesota. The Hornets will return for their second heat at 3:40 p.m. against Wisconsin and Tennessee. Sacramento State’s second varsity eight will compete at 9 a.m., and 3:40 p.m., the novice eight will race at 9:50 a.m., and the varsity four will compete at 8:30 a.m. and 3:10 p.m.
