ROWING WINS SILVER MEDAL AT THE DAD VAIL REGATTA

5/10/2008

PHILADELPHIA - The Sacramento State women’s rowing team placed in front of 38 other entries, and finished with a silver medal in the Women’s Varsity Heavyweight Eight competition Saturday afternoon during the second and final day of the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River.

The Hornets, who placed first in their heat yesterday, and first in their semifinal earlier this morning, were one of six teams that qualified for the final with the winner receiving the Evelyn Bergman Trophy. Sacramento State finished today’s final with a time of 6:35.77 over 2,000 meters, less than two seconds behind the first-place UC Davis’ Cup winning time of 6:34.01. Purdue (6:36.90), Buffalo (6:42.13), San Diego (6:43.10) and St. Joseph’s (6:45.45) finished in places 3-6, respectively.

In this morning’s semifinal, Sacramento State placed first with a time of 6:19.90, followed by Purdue (6:21.81) and Alabama (6:30.25) to round out the top three places.

Founded in 1934, the Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States with over 100 colleges and Universities from the U.S. and Canada. Over 115 schools and 3,000 rowers compete in 19 events that encompass 150 races on the Schuylkill River.

Sacramento State was competing in the Dad Vail Regatta for the first time since 2004, when the team won its first-ever Everlyn Bergman Tropy. In 2003, the team failed to reach the grand final, placing second in the petite final.

The Hornets only travelled their varsity eight boat to the Dad Vail Regatta as the rest of the team will resume action next weekend at the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships (Saturday, May 17) and the Pac-10 Championships (Sunday, May 18). The Pac-10 Championships signal the end of the regular season.

SACRAMENTO STATE’S LINEUP: Erin DeGoede at coxswain, Aimee Chenard at stroke, Kellie Cook at seven, Holly Hopkins at six, Michelle McMullen at five, Dani Thole at four, Krista Hill at three, Ashley Loucks at two and Ruthie Van Esso at bow.
