ROWING ADVANCES TO SEMIFINALS DURING THE FIRST DAY OF DAD VAIL REGATTA

5/9/2008

PHILADELPHIA - The Sacramento State women’s varsity eight posted the sixth-fastest time among 40 boats in the Women’s Varsity Heavyweight Eight competition Friday morning during the first day of the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River.

The Hornets, who easily won their heat with a time of 6:31.3 over 2,000 meters, will now advance to the semifinals of the event tomorrow (Saturday, May 10) at 7:56 a.m. PST. Should the Hornets finish among the top two boats in their semifinal race, the team would advance to the grand final with a chance to win the Everlyn Bergman Trophy tomorrow at 1:25 p.m. PST.

Founded in 1934, the Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States with over 100 colleges and Universities from the U.S. and Canada. Over 115 schools and 3,000 rowers compete in 19 events that encompass 150 races on the Schuylkill River’s 2,000 meter course.

In tomorrow’s semifinal, Sacramento State will take on crews from Massachusetts, Purdue, Alabama and Temple.

The Hornets are competing in the Dad Vail Regatta for the first time since 2004, when the team won its first-ever Everlyn Bergman Trophy. In 2003, the team failed to reach the grand final, placing second in the petite final.

The Hornets only travelled their varsity eight boat to the Dad Vail Regatta as the rest of the team will resume action next weekend at the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships (Saturday, May 17) and the Pac-10 Championships (Sunday, May 18).
