SAN DIEGO – The Sacramento State women’s varsity eight placed fourth in the San Diego Crew Classic’s Cal Cup grand final Sunday morning at Crown Point Shores Park in Mission Bay.
Sacramento State, which advanced to the grand final yesterday after winning its heat, rowed to a fourth-place finish of 6:53.96 over 2,000 meters. UC Davis won the grand final with a time of 6:48.30, followed by San Diego (6:49.39), Buffalo (6:51.41), Sacramento State, San Diego State (6:59.30) and Kansas State (7:02.15).
The Hornets, who had defeated Buffalo yesterday by less than two seconds in its heat, could not slip past the Bulls today and missed finishing among the medal boats. Sacramento State was a little more than five seconds off UC Davis’ winning time, and slightly more than four seconds back of San Diego, which are two of the top teams in the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA).
The top two boats from each of the three varsity eight heats yesterday advanced to the grand final, and Sacramento State finished first in its heat. The Hornets, who did not compete in the San Diego Crew Classic last year, also placed fourth in the 2006 Cal Cup grand final and third in 2005.
Sacramento State’s second varsity eight and novice eight boats competed yesterday in the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic, but neither advanced to today’s finals.
Sacramento State will take two weeks off before returning to the water when the team travels to West Sacramento to renew its rivalry with UC Davis. The two teams’ varsity eight boats battle each year for the Jean Runyon Cup, a prize the Hornets have claimed eight times in the last nine years. However, UC Davis was victorious last year over Sacramento State for the first time since 1998.
