ROWING’S VARSITY EIGHT ADVANCES TO SAN DIEGO CREW CLASSIC CAL CUP FINAL

SAN DIEGO – The Sacramento State women’s varsity eight posted the third-fastest time in any of the three heats on the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic Saturday morning at Crown Point Shores Park in Mission Bay.

The Hornets’ varsity eight will now advance to tomorrow’s Cal Cup grand final where the team will face UC Davis, San Diego, San Diego State, Kansas State and SUNY Buffalo at 10:30 a.m. The Hornets, who did not compete in the San Diego Crew Classic last year, placed fourth in the 2006 Cal Cup grand final and third in 2005. The team will seek its first Cal Cup championship since 2000.

The Hornets won their heat with a time of 6:43.00, followed by SUNY Buffalo (6:44.07), Loyola Marymount (6:52.37), Santa Clara (6:53.37), UC Irvine (7:02.25), Colorado (7:06.03) and Texas’ club team (7:22.18). The top two teams in each of the three varsity eight heats advanced to the grand final, the third and fourth place teams advanced to the petite final. The remaining boats advanced to the third final.

The time of 6:43.00 was the third fastest of any of the three heats, trailing UC Davis’ time of 6:33.56 and San Diego's time of 6:34.91 in the first heat.

Sacramento State’s second varsity eight and novice eight also competed in today’s competition. The second varsity eight finished with a time of 7:04.75 over 2,000 meters, but did not advance to either the petite or grand final events. The team’s novice eight posted a time of 7:29.82, and also did not qualify for the grand or petite finals.
