ROWING LOOKS FOR NINTH CONSECUTIVE VICTORY OVER UC DAVIS THIS SATURDAY
4/5/2007
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Sacramento State women’s rowing squad will host UC Davis for rights to the Jean Runyon Cup this Saturday, April 7, at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center on Lake Natoma.
The annual race has been one-sided over the years, as the Hornets’ varsity eight has defeated the Aggies every year since 1999, a span of eight consecutive victories. The winner of the varsity eight race receives the Jean Runyon Cup, a prize that has remained on Sacramento State’s campus all but one year since the two programs began racing for the Cup in 1997.
Saturday’s racing begins at 8 a.m. and runs until approximately 10:30 a.m. Women’s races include the second varsity eight (8 a.m.), varsity eight (8:30 a.m.), novice eight (9 a.m.), varsity four (9:30 a.m.) and novice four (10:15 a.m.).
Saturday’s race against UC Davis will mark the first time that Sacramento State has competed since March 11. The Hornets’ varsity eight is currently 8-0 in dual meets this year, and has won 30 consecutive duals dating back to 2003. The second varsity eight is 4-0 in duals, and the novice eight is 7-1.
Saturday’s varsity eight race will also count towards the Causeway Cup standings, an annual all-sports competition between Sacramento State and UC Davis. The race will count as five points towards the standings, as UC Davis currently leads Sacramento State, 43.67-36.00. Men’s and women’s track will compete for 10 points on Friday. After Saturday’s rowing, only five more events will take place between the two programs (two softball games, two baseball games and men’s tennis). The Hornets handily won last year’s Causeway Cup, 66.25-38.75.
