ROWING CLOSES SEASON WITH THIRD PLACE PETITE FINAL FINISH AT THE PAC 10 CHAMPIONSHIPS

5/14/2006

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Cal was victorious in both the women’s varsity eight and second varsity eight grand finals, while Gonzaga took home the gold medal in the novice eight competition at the Pacific-10 Conference Rowing Championships Sunday afternoon at the Lake Natoma.

Cal’s varsity eight won the grand final for the third-consecutive season while the Bears’ second varsity eight won for the fourth-straight year. Cal finished at least third in all four grand finals (varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and varsity four), including a third-place finish in the novice eight and a first-place finish in the varsity four.

Sacramento State fielded boats in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight competitions. The Hornets’ novice eight reached the grand final of the Pac 10’s for the first time in school history, placing fifth with a time of 7:09.6.

After placing fourth in the petite final last year, Sacramento State’s varsity eight placed third in this year’s petite final. The Hornets’ second varsity eight also reached the petite final, racing to a fourth-place finish. The top three boats in each of the morning’s qualifying heats advanced to the grand final while places 4-6 in each qualifying heat reached the petite final. Sacramento State’s novice eight placed second in its morning heat, while the varsity eight was fourth in its heat and the second varsity eight fifth in its heat.

In the varsity eight petite final, Oregon State placed first with a time of 6:42.1, followed by Loyola Marymount (6:45.1), Sacramento State (6:46.0), Gonzaga (6:48.2), San Diego State (6:50.4) and Saint Mary’s (6:55.3). Sacramento State, Loyola Marymount and Gonzaga were the top three finishers, respectively, at the WIRA Championships two weeks ago.

In the second varsity eight petite final, Oregon State won with a time of 6:58.3, followed by San Diego State (7:03.6), Loyola Marymount (7:04.1) and Sacramento State (7:06.9) to round out the top four.

In the novice eight grand final, Gonzaga placed first with a time of 6:48.1, followed by Washington (6:51.1), Cal (6:55.6), Oregon State (6:58.4), Sacramento State (7:09.6) and Stanford (7:18.9).

The Pacific-10 Championships are limited to the top 21 entrants for each event in the West Region, which includes each of the seven Pac-10 rowing institutions (Cal, Washington State, Stanford, Oregon State, Washington, UCLA and USC; Oregon is club status).

In addition, the Pac-10’s mark the end of the women’s rowing regular season. Since the advent of the NCAA Championships in 1997, holding the Pac-10’s on the final weekend allows the selection committee to compare virtually all the West Coast (Pac-10 and non Pac-10) crews under comparable race conditions. With no time standard to meet, boats competing in the NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships will be named by a selection committee this Tuesday, May 16.

Sacramento State’s successful season came to a close today as the team ends a year in which it won the WIRA Championships for the first time since 2001, and the fourth time in school history. Today also marked the end of the intercollegiate careers of Sacramento State varsity eight performers Brittney Claycamp, Laura Harder, Steffanie Jakovac and Ashley Roundtree.
