ROWING CONTINUES TO IMPRESS WITH VICTORY OVER SAN DIEGO STATE

3/12/2006

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Sacramento State’s women’s varsity eight improved to 5-0 this year and 20-0 in dual meets dating back to 2004 with a victory over San Diego State Sunday morning at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center on Lake Natoma.

The Hornets’ top boat posted a time of 6:52.9 over 2,000 meters, followed by San Diego State’s time of 6:59.5. The Hornets have not lost a dual meet since the 2003 spring season, and have won all but one of their duals over the last two years by at least seven seconds.

Competitors had to deal with rain and cross winds almost the entire morning and the rain grew stronger as the day went on, especially for the varsity four competition.

In the second varsity eight race, San Diego State won with a time of 7:01.5, followed by Sacramento State at 7:09.7. The dual-meet loss for the Hornets marked the first for the second varsity eight since the 2003 season, snapping a streak of 13-straight dual victories.

The Hornets’ novice eight ran its winning streak to 16-straight dual meets (dating back to last season) as the boat posted a winning time of 7:11.6, followed by San Diego State (7:24.9) and Sacramento State’s B boat (7:27.0).

In the varsity four competition, San Diego State A posted a winning time of 7:46.7, followed by San Diego State B (8:02.7) and Sacramento State (8:11.7). With about 250 meters to go, the Hornets lost their momentum after catching a crab, effectively ending their chances of a first or second-place finish.

Sacramento State will now take its longest break of the spring season as the team does not compete again until traveling to the San Diego Crew Classic on April 1-2.
