ROWING CLOSES FALL SEASON WITH SECOND-PLACE FINISH AT THE NEWPORT AUTUMN FESTIVAL

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – The Sacramento State women''s varsity eight placed second out of 24 boats in the Open Eight Competition, highlighting the Hornets'' final regatta on the fall schedule Sunday afternoon at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival.

The Hornets, who placed fifth in the open eight competition last year, crossed the 2.7-mile race course with a time of 16:18, trailing champion UCLA (15:55). San Diego State (16:21), San Diego (16:30), UCLA B (16:34), UC Davis (16:36) and Sacramento State''s B boat (16:46) rounded out the top seven spots in the race, respectively.

Sacramento State also placed first in the open four competition, third in the novice eight competition, and fourth in the pair. The Hornets'' first-place finish in the open four marked the third-consecutive season in which the team has won a gold medal in the event at the Newport Festival. In addition, the Hornets'' novice eight improved on their fifth place finish last year.

In the open four competition which featured a field of 13 boats, Sacramento State''s first-place time of 18:08 was 33 seconds faster than second-place Long Beach State (18:41). The Hornets'' second varsity four finished sixth place with a time of 18:55. In the novice eight competition which featured a field of 20 boats, UCLA raced to a winning time of 17:17, followed by USC A (17:22), Sacramento State (17:50), San Diego State A (18:01) and USC B (18:27) to round out the top five, respectively.

Sacramento State teammates Coralie Wilhite and Mallory Pirie raced in the pair competition, placing fourth with a time of 20:53.
