ROWING WINS TWO BRONZE MEDALS AT SATURDAY'S PCRC's

5/14/2005

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Sacramento State women''s novice four and the open single both took home bronze medals Saturday afternoon at the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships (PCRC''s) at Lake Natoma. Sacramento State also competed in the open four event, placing fourth in its heat.

The Hornets'' novice four, which placed fifth at the WIRA Championships two weeks ago, rowed to a third-place time of 8:12.4 in today''s women''s collegiate novice four final. Saint Mary''s posted a winning time of 7:58.3 over 2,000 meters, followed by Cal''s Lightweights (8:01.7) and Sacramento State to round out the top three finishers.

Sophomore Constance Deslauriers earned the Hornets'' second bronze medal of the day in the open single event as the Montreal, Quebec, native rowed to a third-place time of 8:34.3.

In the second heat of the women''s open four event, Cal posted a winning time of 7:26.0, followed by Saint Mary''s (7:35.6), Gonzaga (7:38.6) and Sacramento State (7:42.8) to round out the top four finishers. The Hornets failed to reach the final of the event as only the top three finishers in each heat advanced to the final.

Sacramento State also competed an alumni boat in the women''s open eight event, winning a bronze medal with a time of 7:13.9.

The PCRC''s are open to all schools in the West Region, which include any rowing institution located in the states of Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado and Arizona. A total of 18 schools were represented at the regatta which offers individual championships in every collegiate rowing category not offered in Sunday''s Pacific-10 Conference Championships.

Sacramento State returns to the water tomorrow (Sunday, May 15) at Lake Natoma as the team will compete in the Pacific-10 Championships, which is open to the top 21 entrants for each event in the West Region. The Hornets'' varsity eight needs to place at least fourth in tomorrow''s grand final to have a shot at a berth into the NCAA Championships at Lake Natoma on May 27-29. Should the team fail to reach the grand final, the Hornets'' season would come to an end tomorrow as the Pac-10 Championships signals the conclusion of the rowing regular season.
