ROWING TAKES HOME BRONZE MEDAL AT THE KNECHT CUP REGATTA

CAMDEN, N.J. - In its first-ever appearance at the Knecht Cup Regatta, the Sacramento State women''s varsity eight took home a bronze medal after placing third in the grand final Sunday morning on the Cooper River.

Sacramento State fielded boats in both the varsity eight and varsity four competitions at the regatta. Both boats were able to reach their respective grand finals after advancing past the heats and semifinals yesterday. The Hornets'' varsity four placed fourth in its grand final earlier this morning.

In the varsity eight grand final, UMass posted a first-place time of 6:43.80, followed by George Washington (6:50.20), Sacramento State (6:53.60), Marist (6:55.04), Gonzaga (6:57.09) and Rhode Island (6:57.42). Sacramento State placed first in both its heat and in the semifinals on Saturday to earn a spot in today''s grand final. A total of 27 crews entered the varsity eight competition.

In the varsity four grand final, Kansas "A" raced to a winning time of 7:48.80, followed by Villanova (7:56.03), Boston College (8:01.31), Sacramento State (8:02.31), Penn State (8:04.47) and Kansas "B" (8:08.60). The Hornets’ varsity four placed second in its heat, and third in the semifinals on Saturday to advance to today''s grand final. A total of 23 crews entered the varsity four competition.

Sacramento State returns to the water on Saturday, April 23, as the Hornets host UC Davis for the Jean Runyon Cup (in the varsity eight competition). The Hornets'' varsity eight has defeated the Aggies each of the last six years, including a seven-second victory last season.

Varsity Four: Megan Williams at coxswain, Ashley Borelli at stroke, Courtney Buehler at three, Aimee Chenard at two and Teresa Bitcon at bow.
