BROWN WINS FOURTH NATIONAL TITLE IN THE LAST SIX YEARS; MERCYHURST CAPTURES ITS FIRST-EVER DIV. II NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

5/30/2004

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. -- In a nearly perfect day under calm conditions at the CSUS Aquatic Center, Brown placed first in the both the varsity eight and second varsity eight competitions, and captured the Div. I team title at the 2004 NCAA Women's Rowing Championships. It marked the fourth time in six years in which Brown has been crowned national champions (1999, 2000, 2002, 2004).

In the Div. II category, Mercyhurst captured its first national title in school history, placing first in the varsity eight, and runner-up in the second varsity eight competition. Ithaca was crowned Div. III champions on Saturday.

The first title of the day to be awarded was the Div. II championship where Mercyhurst (18 points) edged Humboldt State (17) by one point for the team title. UC Davis had won the last two Div. II titles as the NCAA began offering separate division championships in 2002. Trailing Mercyhurst and Humboldt State were Western Washington (10) in third place and Barry (5) as the fourth-place team. Western Washington had finished as the runner-ups in both 2002 and 2003.

Mercyhurst raced to a winning time of 7:02.9 in the Div. II varsity eight grand final, followed by Humboldt State (7:06.2), Florida Tech (7:10.5) and Western Washington (7:11.3). The Lakers also placed second in the varsity four competition, earning six points for their second-place finish. Those six points combined with 12 points for winning the varsity eight race gave Mercyhurst the team title. Humboldt State was victorious in the varsity four competition with a time of 7:57.5, followed by Mercyhurst (8:04.4) and Western Washington (8:11.3).

Brown, which is one of four teams to reach the NCAA Championships every year since the inaugural event in 1997, tallied 70 points for the team title. Yale posted its top finish in school history with a second-place finishing 58 points, followed by Michigan (52), Cal (51), Washington (43), Princeton (36), Virginia (36), Ohio State (33), Washington State (28), Harvard (24), Wisconsin (19) and Michigan State (18). Brown's 70 points were the most by a team since 1998. Harvard won last year's championship with 59 points, edging out Brown by two points.

In the varsity eight grand final, Brown's time of 6:32.9 was just 1.7 seconds faster than second-place Yale (6:34.6). Rounding out the top six were Michigan (6:37.1), Princeton (6:37.7), Ohio State (6:38.9) and Princeton (6:37.7). In the varsity eight petite final, Washington won with a time of 6:37.8, followed by Harvard, Virginia, Tennessee, Notre Dame and USC, respectively.

Brown captured its first title of the day in the second varsity eight competition, placing first with a time of 6:44.1. Behind Brown were Cal (6:46.8), Washington State (6:47.0), Michigan (6:47.2), Yale (6:50.4) and Cal (6:40.1). In the second varsity eight petite final, Virginia posted a winning time of 6:48.8, followed by Wisconsin, Harvard, Princeton, Michigan State and Ohio State, respectively.

After placing eighth in the varsity four competition last year, Virginia came away with this year's fours championship. The Cavaliers' winning time of 7:27.5 was more than three seconds faster than second-place Washington (7:30.8). Brown (7:32.2), Yale (7:34.4), Cal (7:39.3) and Ohio State (7:39.9) rounded out the top six, respectively.

In the Div. I varsity four petite final, Wisconsin placed first with a time of 7:32.5, followed by Michigan State (7:34.2), Michigan (7:37.7), Princeton (7:39.5), Washington State (7:41.1) and Harvard (7:46.4).
