ITHACA WINS THE DIV. III NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP; CAL, YALE AND BROWN ADVANCE ALL TEAMS TO THE DIV. I GRAND FINALS
RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. -- Ithaca placed both boats in the Div. III varsity eight grand final, and went on to squeak out a 0.1-second victory over Smith I in the final to win its first-ever women's rowing national championship Saturday at the CSUS Aquatic Center. Ithaca, which placed third at last year's national championships, scored seven points to easily win the team championship. Smith (10) placed second, followed by Williams (13), Puget Sound (13), Coast Guard (17) and Trinity (18).Ithaca posted a winning time of 7:00.8 in the grand final, followed by Smith I (7:00.9), Williams I (7:02.3), Puget Sound I (7:03.4), Coast Guard I (7:05.4) and Ithaca II (7:07.1). Ithaca was the only team to place both boats in the grand final, as the Bombers' second boat was victorious in yesterday's repechage.
"This is an indescribable feeling and an amazing emotional high," Ithaca head coach Becky Robinson said. "We started talking about this in September, and an incredible amount of work was put into this championship. Amazingly, these were the same lineups we started with at the beginning of the season."
Ithaca's seven points were the best total in Div. III championships history (2002-pres.) as Colby scored 10 points last year and Williams tallied nine points in 2002 (the lowest point total is crowned champions in Div. III competition).
"This is a fantastic feeling because we've been working so hard as a team this entire season," said Ithaca co-captain Leslie Nichols. "To go out with both boats in the grand final is an amazing accomplishment."
Added team co-captain Catie Gloo, "For the six seniors on this team, it's a great way to go out with all the hard work we've put in over the last four years."
In the petite final of the Div. III eights event, Trinity I posted a winning time of 7:16.4, followed by Smith II (7:19.9), Puget Sound II (7:26.5), Williams II (7:27.9), Trinity II (7:30.1) and Coast Guard II (7:35.1).
In Saturday's Div. I competition, Cal, Brown and Yale each advanced all three of their boats (varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four) to grand final events. Cal and Yale are both seeking their first-ever national championship while Brown has been crowned champions three times (1999, 2000, 2002). Brown's 1999 championship came at the CSUS Aquatic Center. Defending national champion Harvard did not make the grand final in any event, assuring itself of not repeating as champions.
The varsity eight grand final field (Ohio State, Michigan, Brown, Yale, Cal and Princeton) was decided via two semifinal heats that took place today. Yale (6:36.6), Michigan (6:37.8) and Ohio State (6:38.9) finished in the top three, respectively, in the first semifinal while Brown (6:33.0), Cal (6:36.4) and Princeton (6:36.41) finished among the top three, respectively, in the second semifinal. Michigan State, Washington State, Texas and Wisconsin did not reach the petite or grand finals in the varsity eight event. Tomorrow's varsity eight petite final field (11:45 a.m.) will include USC, Notre Dame, Virginia, Washington, Harvard and Tennessee. The grand final will begin at noon.
Brown and Washington earned a spot in the grand finals of the Div. I second varsity eight competition (11:15 a.m.) after finishing first in Friday's heats. In today's first repechage, Washington State (6:48.4) and Yale (6:48.8) earned a spot in the grand finals after finishing first and second, respectively. In the second repechage, Cal (6:52.0) and Michigan (6:53.7) were victorious to advance to the grand final. Wisconsin, Michigan State, Virginia, Princeton, Harvard and Ohio State will compete on Sunday (11 a.m.) in the petite final.
In the Div. I fours competition, Brown (7:33.0) and Yale (7:34.0) earned a spot in the grand finals by virtue of finishing first and second, respectively, in today's first repechage. Washington (7:35.6) and Cal (7:39.7) will also compete in tomorrow's final (10:45 a.m.) after finishing among the top two boats in the second repechage. Ohio State and Virginia, who were victorious in yesterday's heats, will join those four teams in the grand final. The petite final field is comprised of Washington State, Michigan, Princeton, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Harvard.
In the Div. II category, Florida Tech (7:13.7) won the morning's varsity eight repechage, advancing to Sunday's grand final (10:15 a.m.) with Mercyhurst, Western Washington and Humboldt State. The petite final (10 a.m. on Sunday) will include Nova Southeastern and Barry. Mercyhurst (8:10.2) won the varsity four repechage to advance to tomorrow's grand final. The Lakers will compete against Humboldt State and Western Washington at 9:45 a.m.
Sunday will conclude the 2004 NCAA Women's Rowing Championships as a Div. I and Div. II national champion will be crowned. The day kicks off at 9:45 a.m., and concludes with the Div. I eights grand final at noon. The Div. II champion will be crowned at an awards ceremony at 11:30 a.m., while the Div. I champion will be honored at a 12:45 p.m. awards ceremony.
