Notre Dame, Yale, Ohio State, Michigan, Virginia, USC, Harvard, Cal, Washington, Brown, Princeton and Tennessee all advanced to the semifinals of the varsity eight event (which takes place Saturday at 10:30 and 10:45 a.m.).

Ohio State won the day's first race (Div. I Eights, Heat 1) with a time of 6:45.6, followed by Washington (6:48.0) and Notre Dame (6:48.7). Michigan was victorious in the second heat with a time of 6:45.8, while Cal (6:49.5) and Virginia (6:54.8) finished second and third, respectively. In heat three, Brown posted the fastest varsity eight heat time (6:44.1), followed by Yale (6:46.7) and Princeton (6:49.2). The top three finishers in each of the varsity eight heats advanced to the semifinals tomorrow (Saturday, May 29) at 10:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.

Harvard, Tennessee and USC qualified for the semifinals after clinching the top three spots in Friday afternoon's repechage.

In the Div. I second varsity eight competition, Brown and Washington posted the top times in their respective heats, automatically advancing to Sunday's grand final (11 a.m.). Michigan State, Ohio State, Washington State, Virginia and Yale will race each other in tomorrow's first repechage race while Harvard, Princeton, Cal, Michigan and Wisconsin will square off in the second repechage. The top two finishers in each repechage advance to Sunday's second varsity eight grand final.

In the Div. I fours event, Virginia and Ohio State earned the top spots in their respective heats, advancing to the grand final on Sunday (10:45 a.m.). In the first heat, Virginia finished with a time of 7:28.9, followed by Yale, Cal, Princeton, Washington State and Michigan State, respectively. In the second heat, Ohio State raced to a first-place time of 7:35.4, followed by Washington, Brown, Wisconsin, Michigan and Harvard, respectively. The repechages of the fours competition will take place on Saturday, with the top two finishers in each rep advancing to the Sunday's final.

In the Div. II eights competition, Mercyhurst, Western Washington and Humboldt State all advanced to the grand final, which will take place Sunday at 10:15 a.m. Nova Southeastern, Florida Tech and Barry will square of in Saturday morning's repechage with the winner of that race advancing to the grand final.

Both Humboldt State and Western Washington will also be competing in the Div. II fours grand final on Sunday (10:45 a.m.). Mercyhurst and Barry will be racing in Saturday's repechage for the remaining spot in the grand final.

Ithaca I and Puget Sound I were each winners of their heats in the Div. III eights category. Those two schools will be joined by Coast Guard I, Smith I, Ithaca II and Williams I (who advanced via a two-two finish in a repechage) in tomorrow's grand final at 11:30 a.m. Coast Guard II, Trinity II, Trinity I, Smith II, Puget Sound II and Williams II will each compete in tomorrow's petite final (11:15 a.m.).

All 28 crews return to action on Saturday, May 29, for the second day of the championships. Racing kicks off with the Div. II eights repechage at 9 a.m., and concludes with the Div. III eights grand final. The Div. III national champion will be crowned on Saturday while the Div. I and Div. II national champions will be crowned on Sunday.
