ROWING'S JV EIGHT WINS GOLD, VARSITY EIGHT EARNS SILVER AT THE WIRA CHAMPS.
RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. -- Sacramento State''s second varsity eight took home the gold for the first time in program history while the team''s varsity eight earned the silver medal in the final day of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships Sunday morning at CSUS Aquatic Center on Lake Natoma.Loyola Marymount won the varsity eight competition for the second year in a row with a 2,000-meter time of 6:51.6, followed by Sacramento State (6:55.1), Gonzaga (6:55.9), UC Davis (7:03.2), Puget Sound (7:09.7) and UC Santa Barbara (7:12.9). The Hornets improved on last year’s finish in which the varsity eight placed fourth. The team entered the WIRA Championships as the No. 1 seed after defeating Loyola Marymount in dual-meet action two weeks ago.
After never finishing higher than second place at the WIRA Championships, Sacramento State’s second varsity eight got over the hump today as the team recorded a convincing win for the gold medal. The Hornets raced to a time of 6:59.0, followed by Gonzaga (7:04.2), UC Davis (7:06.8), Loyola Marymount (7:09.9), San Diego State (7:17.0) and UC Santa Barbara (7:26.7).
Sacramento State’s novice eight also finished with a silver medal, equaling its highest finish in program history (the 1997 novice eight finished second as well). Including the Hornets’ varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight, a total of five Sacramento State boats finished with at least the silver medal in today’s championships. The Hornets also finished first in the women’s pair and second in the women’s novice lightweight four competitions. Sacramento State’s second novice eight was the only boat not to medal.
The Hornets'' Christy Clifton, Stephanie Brow and Erika Bracy were each named first team all-WIRA, and Katie Litvinchuk was named to the second team. Brow was also named all-WIRA during the 2002 spring season.
Sacramento State’s varsity eight returns to the water next weekend (May 7-8) as the team competes at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia. The Hornets placed second in the petite final of last year’s regatta.
