5/1/2004

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. -- Sacramento State''s varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity pair and novice eight each finished first in their respective heats in the opening day of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships Saturday afternoon at the CSUS Aquatic Center.

The WIRA Championships will conclude tomorrow (Sunday, May 2) as the Hornets will place six different boats in grand final races. Sacramento State''s varsity eight (12:10 p.m.), second varsity eight (10:20 a.m.), varsity pair (8:40 a.m.), novice eight (10 a.m.), second novice eight (9 a.m.) and novice lightweight four (8 a.m.) will each compete

Sacramento State''s varsity eight, which is seeking its third WIRA Championship in the last five years, will assume lane one in tomorrow''s grand final, along with Gonzaga (Lane 2), Loyola Marymount (Lane 3), UC Santa Barbara (Lane 4), Puget Sound (Lane 5) and UC Davis (Lane 6). The Hornets easily won their heat with a 2,000-meter time of 6:51.8, followed by Puget Sound (6:58.4), San Diego State (7:00.3), Humboldt State (7:07.0), UC San Diego (7:21.4) and Portland (8:55.4).

Both the Hornets'' varsity eight and second varsity eight boats were seeded first entering the weekend for the first time in program history. Sacramento State''s second varsity eight also won handily with a time of 7:02.5, followed by UC Davis (7:11.0), Puget Sound (7:18.0), UC San Diego (7:31.7), and Lewis and Clark (7:35.1). The Hornets'' second varsity eight will be seeking its first WIRA Championship in school history.

Sacramento State''s varsity four finished third in its heat early this morning before coming back later in the day to post a third-place finish in the petite final. The Hornets'' varsity four will be the team''s only boat that will not reach a grand final this weekend.

Other times for Sacramento State boats in their respective heats were as follows: women''s pair (8:51.9) and novice eight (7:15.1). The second novice eight and novice lightweight four competitions only feature a grand final, so the Hornets did not compete in those competitions today.
