ROWING ENTERS THIS WEEKEND'S WIRA CHAMPIONSHIPS AS THE NO. 1 SEED

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento State women''s rowing team will serve as host of the 27-school Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships this weekend (Saturday, May 1, and Sunday, May 2) on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif.

Saturday''s regatta will consist of 51 races (28 on the women''s side, 23 on the men''s side) beginning at 8 a.m., and continuing to approximately 5 p.m. Sunday''s competition, which includes the grand finals for each event, consists of 26 races (13 on the women''s side, 13 on the men''s side) beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at approximately 12:30 p.m.

The women''s varsity eight competition will begin Saturday with three heats at 1:30 p.m., 1:40 p.m. and 1:50 p.m., respectively. The grand final takes place Sunday at 12:10 p.m. A total of 18 schools will compete for the women''s varsity eight championship comprising of No. 1-seed Sacramento State, No. 2 Loyola Marymount, No. 3 Gonzaga, No. 4 UC Davis, No. 5 San Diego, No. 6 San Diego State, No. 7 Puget Sound, No. 8 UC Santa Barbara, No. 9 UC Irvine, No. 10 Western Washington, No. 11 Santa Clara, No. 12 UC San Diego, No. 13 Humboldt State, No. 14 Lewis and Clark, No. 15 Saint Mary''s, No. 16 Pacific Lutheran, No. 17 Willamette and No. 18 Portland.

Sacramento State earned its No. 1 seed after defeating both No. 2 Loyola Marymount (April 17) and No. 4 UC Davis (March 13) by more than seven seconds in dual-meet action this season. Rounding out the top five seeds, the Hornets have yet to face No. 3-seed Gonzaga or No. 5 San Diego this year.

In addition, Sacramento State''s second varsity eight earned the No. 1 seed, marking the first time in program history that both the Hornets'' first and second varsity eight boats both earned the top seed at the WIRA Championships. The team''s top two boats have combined to go 11-0 in dual-meet action this year, with the varsity eight compiling a 7-0 record and the second varsity eight going 4-0.

At last year''s WIRA Championships, Loyola Marymount rowed to a winning time of 6:46.3 in the varsity eight competition. Gonzaga, San Diego, Sacramento State and Willamette rounded out the top five finishers in the event. The Hornets won the WIRA varsity eight title in 2000 and 2001, while Gonzaga was crowned champions in 2002.

Other grand final times this Sunday include the women''s novice eight (10 a.m.), women''s second varsity eight (10:40 a.m.), women''s lightweight eight (11 a.m.), men''s novice eight (10:10 a.m.), men''s second varsity eight (10:50 a.m.), men''s lightweight eight (11:10 a.m.) and men''s varsity eight (noon).
