SAN DIEGO - The Sacramento State women''s varsity eight raced to a second-place finish in the Cal Cup Petite Final of the San Diego Crew Classic Sunday morning at Mission Bay.

In a race that featured five teams finishing within eight seconds of each other, the Hornets'' 2,000-meter time of 7:10.83 trailed first-place UC Davis (7:09.60) by just 1.23 seconds. St. Joseph''s finished third with a time of 7:14.49, followed by Kansas State (7:15.29), SMU (7:16.99) and Central Florida (7:24.20)

The Hornets improved on last year''s San Diego Crew Classic performance in which the team''s varsity eight placed fourth in the petite final. Sacramento State finished second in the same event in 2002.

After capturing the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association championship last year, Loyola Marymount appears to be the team to beat again in the WIRA as the Lions won the Cal Cup Grand Final with a time of 7:12.70. Miami (7:16.65) and UCLA (7:20.43) rounded out the top three in the event.

Sacramento State''s second varsity eight placed first in the yesterday''s JV Eight Third Final while the Hornets'' novice eight placed fifth in its respective heat on Saturday.

Sacramento State returns to the water on Saturday, April 17, as the team takes on Loyola Marymount and UC Santa Barbara in dual meets in Los Angeles.
