SACRAMENTO STATE MOURNS THE LOSS OF ROWER VICTORIA BUITRAGO

2/14/2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Victoria Buitrago, a junior at Sacramento State and a member of the Hornets' novice crew, died in a multiple-car accident Friday afternoon in El Dorado Hills, Calif.

Buitrago, who was a first-year member of the Hornets' squad, attended both American River Junior College and Solano Community College prior to enrolling at Sacramento State.

"Victoria was an amazing individual who added heart and soul to our novice squad," Sacramento State assistant coach Carrie Hagen said. "She was very committed to each stroke on the water, and cared deeply for both her family and her teammates."

"This is a very sad day for everyone who cares about Hornet athletics," Sacramento State Athletics Director Dr. Terry Wanless said. "Our prayers are with her family and friends during this time."

Buitrago is survived by her mother Karen, father Rick, brothers Rick, Jr. and Travis, and sister Lauryn. Funeral arrangements have yet to be determined.
