SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sarah McKenzie, a senior on the Sacramento State rowing team, was among 33 female student-athletes representing 21 different NCAA Div. I institutions selected to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District VIII Women''s At-Large team.The at-large category, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), includes student-athletes in the following women''s sports: rowing, gymnastics, skiing, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, water polo, field hockey, lacrosse, tennis, golf and rifle.
McKenzie, who was named to the third team, currently has a 3.78 gpa as a kinesiology major. The Roseville, Calif., native rowed with the Hornets'' varsity eight in all but one race this season. She competed at both the four seat and at stroke while helping lead Sacramento State''s top boat to a 6-4 dual-meet record and a second-place finish in the petite final of last week''s Pac-10 Championships.
McKenzie has missed just one race over the past three years with the varsity squad and has the fourth-fastest 2,000-meter ergometer time on the team. She has been named to the Dean''s List six times and has competed with the Hornets'' rowing team since the 1999-00 season.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 gpa (on a 4.0 scale), must be a starter or an important reserve, and be in at least their second season with the current school.
Sacramento State has now been represented on the Verizon Academic All-District VIII Women''s At-Large team in back-to-back years as rower Mieke Boynton received the honor in 2002.
