5/10/2003

PHILADELPHIA - The Sacramento State women’s varsity eight placed second in the petite final of the heavyweight eight event at the Dad Vail Regatta Saturday afternoon on the Schuylkill River.

The Hornets finished the 2,000-meter course with a time of 6:50.4, a little more than three seconds behind first-place St. Joseph''s (6:47.1). Lehigh (6:54.6), Drake (6:57.8), Central Florida (6:58.1) and Santa Clara (7:11.7) rounded out the petite-final field. In the heavyweight eight grand final, Massachusetts (6:32.2) won the Evelyn Bergman Trophy, finishing ahead of Purdue (6:39.30) and West Virginia (6:39.34).

Sacramento State advanced to the petite final after placing fourth in the semi-finals with a time of 6:48.4 earlier on Saturday. The Hornets raced four times during the two-day regatta, placing second in their heat on Friday with a time of 6:59.5, and first in their repechage with a time of 6:45.7. Sacramento State advanced to the semi-finals by virtue of its first-place finish in the repechage.

A total of 41 schools entered the competition, and only six schools reached the grand final.

Head coach Mike Connors used the following varsity eight lineup for all three races: Chanel Patterson at bow, Brittney Claycamp at the two seat, Sara Crain at three, Jennifer Boyer at four, Laura Harder at five, Stephanie Brow at six, Katie Litvinchuk at seven, Sarah McKenzie at stroke and Christy Clifton at coxswain.

This year marks just the second time in program history (2002) the Hornets have participated at the Dad Vail Regatta. Last year, Sacramento State placed sixth out of 45 schools at the regatta.
