RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. -- The Loyola Marymount women''s varsity eight rowed to a winning time of 6:46.3 over 2,000 meters, a little under three seconds faster than Gonzaga (6:49.1), to claim the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championship Sunday morning at Lake Natoma.Gonzaga was the defending WIRA champions in the varsity eight while Sacramento State had won the title the two previous years (2000, 2001). San Diego won the bronze medal with a time of 6:49.7, followed by Sacramento State (6:57.4), Willamette (7:00.8) and San Diego State (7:04.5). The WIRA Championships include every rowing institution on the West Coast that is not a member of the Pac 10 (a total of 26 schools).
In the women''s second varsity eight competition, Gonzaga won the gold medal for the second-consecutive year with a time of 7:05.3. Sacramento State placed second with a time of 7:10.9, marking the team''s highest finish in the second varsity eight in school history. San Diego State grabbed the bronze medal with a time of 7:12.9, followed by UC Davis (7:13.3), San Diego (7:21.3) and UC Irvine (7:27.3).
Sacramento State also medaled in the women''s novice lightweight four with a third-place time of 8:09.7. Cal''s Lightweights posted a first-place time of 7:59.7, followed by Long Beach State (8:02.7), Sacramento State, UC Santa Barbara (8:16.4), Pacific Lutheran (8:19.4) and Portland (8:51.2).
UC Davis (7:05.1) was victorious in the novice eight grand final, followed by UC San Diego (7:12.4), UC Santa Barbara (7:15.5), Humboldt State (7:21.7), Pacific Lutheran (7:24.4) and San Diego (7:28.0). Sacramento State won the petite final in the novice eight competition yesterday.
More women''s grand final winners included Gonzaga (novice four), UC San Diego (second novice eight), Puget Sound (pair), San Diego State (lightweight four and lightweight eight) and Seattle Pacific (varsity four).
Sacramento State head coach Mike Connors used the following varsity eight lineup for today''s competition: Chanel Patterson at bow, Brittney Claycamp at the two seat, Sara Crain at three, Jennifer Boyer at four, Laura Harder at five, Stephanie Brow at six, Katie Litvinchuk at seven, Sarah McKenzie at stroke and Christy Clifton at coxswain.
The Hornets'' second varsity eight lineup consisted of Kira Morrison at bow, Ashley Carl at two, Steffanie Jakovac at three, Erika Bracy at four, Lauren Coats at five, Rebecca Hurtt at six, Adelle Reimer at seven, Megan Foley at stroke and Cecilia Vina at coxswain.
Sacramento State''s novice lightweight four lineup included Heather Pryor at bow, Erin Gordon at two, Allison King at three, Coralie Wilhite at stroke and Christina True at coxswain.
Sacramento State returns to the water next weekend (May 9-10) as it competes at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia.
