ROWING DEFEATS UC DAVIS TO WIN FIFTH-STRAIGHT JEAN RUNYON CUP

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. -- The Sacramento State women''s varsity eight defeated UC Davis by 3.1 seconds to claim the Jean Runyon Cup for the fifth-consecutive year Sunday morning at the CSUS Aquatic Center.

The Hornets have now defeated the Aggies in the varsity eight competition six times since the two teams began racing for the Jean Runyon Cup in 1997. Sacramento State crossed the 2,000-meter finish line with a winning time of 7:07.3, followed by UC Davis (7:10.4).

Sacramento State was also victorious in the second varsity eight competition as the Hornets finished with a time of 7:18.5. UC Davis’ novice eight finished second with a time of 7:21.4, followed by the Aggies’ second varsity eight (7:37.6).

In the third and final race of the day, UC Davis’ second novice eight (7:18.0) edged Sacramento State’s novice eight (7:19.6) by less than two seconds.

All boats had to deal with wet conditions as the heavy rains hit the CSUS Aquatic Center all morning. With today’s victories, Sacramento State’s varsity eight is now 5-2 in dual-meet competitions while the Hornets’ second varsity eight is a perfect 5-0.

Sacramento State used the following varsity eight lineup: Chanel Patterson at bow, Brittney Claycamp at the two seat, Adelle Reimer at three, Jennifer Boyer at four, Laura Harder at five, Stephanie Brow at six, Katie Litvinchuk at seven, Sarah McKenzie at stroke and Christy Clifton at coxswain.

The Hornets’ second varsity eight lineup consisted of Kira Morrison at bow, Sarah Karling at two, Steffanie Jakovac at three, Ashley Carl at four, Lauren Coats at five, Rebecca Hurtt at six, Sara Crain at seven, Megan Foley at stroke and Cecilia Vina at coxswain.

The team’s novice eight lineup was comprised of Heather Pryor at bow, Coralie Wilhite at two, Allison King at three, Monica Kautz at four, Shannon Wagner at five, Sarah Read at six, Lauren Heselbarth at seven, Erin Gordon at stroke and Leia Hawley at coxswain.

Sacramento State returns to the water next Saturday, April 19, as the team participates in the Stanford Invitational at Redwood Shores, Calif.
