SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State rowers Mieke Boynton and Megan Spitze were each awarded National Scholar-Athlete honors, as announced by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) today. In addition, Boynton was named first team all-West Region, also selected by the CRCA.Boynton, a 5-8 native of Bright, Australia, was named to the all-West Region team for the fourth-consecutive year (first team in 1999, 2001 and 2002, and second team in 2000) and the National Scholar-Athlete team for the third-consecutive year.
Boynton, who was also named the Hornet Bookstore Female Student-Athlete of the Year, recently graduated with a 3.905 gpa as an English major. The team co-captain helped lead the Hornets'' varsity eight to a 7-2 dual-meet record and a silver medal at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships this season. She competed in every competition this year and did not miss a race with the Hornets'' top boat during her four-year career (a span of 45-consecutive regattas).
Spitze, a 5-10 native of Fair Oaks, Calif., recently graduated with a 3.553 gpa as a liberal studies major. The team co-captain, who was named to the Dean''s List four times during her four-year career, has now received National Scholar-Athlete honors each of the last three seasons. She competed in the seven seat with the Hornets'' varsity eight in every race this year.
Since joining the top boat her sophomore year, Spitze did not miss a competition (a span of 34-consecutive races in the seven seat).
Boynton and Spitze were among 20 Div. I student-athletes from the West Region to receive National Scholar-Athlete honors. The award is given to female rowers who have participated in at least 75 percent of the season''s races in the varsity eight and have a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA. A total of 93 Div. I student-athletes from five regions were selected.
Boynton was among 13 student-athletes to receive first team all-West Region honors. The 13 selected student-athletes represented 24 schools encompassing the West Region.
