RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – The Washington women''s varsity eight rowed to a winning time of 6:46.4 over 2,000 meters, a little more than seven seconds faster than second-place Cal (6:54.1), to win the Pacific-10 Conference Rowing Championship Sunday afternoon at a rain-soaked Lake Natoma.With the win, the Huskies claimed their 11th-consecutive Pac 10 varsity eight championship. Washington State (6:54.9) finished third in the varsity eight grand final, followed by Stanford (6:55.2), USC (7:00.4) and Oregon State (7:06.0).
In the women''s varsity eight petite final, Loyola Marymount raced to a winning time of 7:27.4, followed by Sacramento State (7:29.5), UC Davis (7:36.2), UC Santa Barbara (7:39.9), San Diego State (7:40.4) and UCLA (7:40.7). It marked the second-consecutive season in which the Hornets finished second in the petite final at the Pac-10''s. Sacramento State advanced to the petite final by finishing third in its morning heat with a time of 7:22.8.
Sacramento State used the following varsity eight lineup: Hannah Metzger at bow, Stephanie Brow at the two seat, Robyn Soliman at three, Veronica Karpinski at four, Adelle Reimer at five, Megan Warren at six, Megan Spitze at seven, Mieke Boynton at stroke and Breanne Hart at coxswain.
Washington was also victorious in the second varsity eight grand final, rowing to a time of 7:01.2, followed by Oregon State (7:07.6), Stanford (7:10.2), Cal (7:13.3), Washington State (7:15.8) and UC Davis (7:42.6). In the varsity four grand final, Cal garnered first-place honors with a time of 7:46.7, followed by Oregon State (7:52.5), Washington (7:54.4), Stanford (7:58.2), Washington State (8:01.5) and UCLA (8:20.7).
In the novice eight grand final, Oregon State rowed to a winning time of 7:12.6, followed by Washington State (7:12.7), Washington (7:15.9), Cal (7:17.6), UCLA (7:28.9) and San Diego State (7:38.2).
The Hornets'' second varsity eight also finished second in its petite final with a time of 7:33.4, trailing USC''s winning time of 7:30.9. Sacramento State''s second boat improved on its fourth-place finish in the petite final last season. Assistant coach Katie Summy used the following second varsity eight lineup: Chanel Patterson at bow, Rebecca Hurtt at two, Sheena Tahilramani at three, Pattie Shagam at four, Erika Bracy at five, Angela Tombolini at six, Paula Clamurro at seven, Sarah McKenzie at stroke and Jenna DuBois at coxswain.
In the varsity four petite final, Sacramento State finished third with a time of 8:36.8, trailing USC (8:21.6) and San Diego State (8:27.6). The Hornets'' varsity four lineup featured Jessica Davis at bow, Katie Litvinchuk at two, Kirstie Smith at three, Karen Donaldson at stroke and Christina Clifton at coxswain.
The Pac-10 Championships are limited to the top 21 entrants for each event in the West Region, which includes each of the seven Pac-10 rowing institutions (Cal, Washington State, Stanford, Oregon State, Washington, UCLA and USC; Oregon is club status). The Pac-10''s offer races in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and the novice eight categories.
Today''s regatta marks the end of the women''s rowing regular season. Since the advent of the NCAA Championships in 1997, holding the Pac-10''s on the final weekend allows the selection committee to compare virtually all West Coast (Pac-10 and non Pac-10) crews under comparable race conditions.
