SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Mieke Boynton, a senior on the Sacramento State rowing team, was among 10 female student-athletes representing nine NCAA Div. I institutions selected to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District VIII Women''s At-Large first team.The at-large category, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), includes student-athletes in the following women''s sports: rowing, gymnastics, skiing, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, water polo, field hockey, lacrosse, tennis, golf and rifle.
Boynton, who was just named the Hornet Bookstore Female Student-Athlete of the Year, currently has a 3.902 gpa as an English major. The Bright, Australia, native led the Hornets'' varsity eight to a 7-2 dual-meet record and a silver medal at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships this season. She sat in the stroke seat in every competition this season and has not missed a race with the Hornets'' top boat during her four-year career (a span of 45-consecutive regattas).
A team co-captain each of the last two seasons, Boynton is a three-time all-West Region selection and a two-time National Scholar-Athlete award winner. She has been named to the Dean''s List all seven semesters and currently has the highest gpa of any female student-athlete at Sacramento State for the second-consecutive year.
Since Boynton joined the team as a freshman (1998-99 season), the varsity eight has combined for a dual-meet record of 27-6 while winning two WIRA championships.
To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 gpa (on a 4.0 scale), must be a starter or an important reserve, and be in at least their second season with the current school.
Boynton will now be on the national Verizon Women''s At-Large Academic All-America ballot along with other student-athletes from all eight districts. First, second and third team national winners will be announced on Thursday, June 13.
